Bowers & Pitsea battled hard but succumbed to a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of East Thurrock United in the Quarter Finals of the BBC Essex Senior Cup Quarter Final. Sean Batt scored the only goal of the game, heading home from a Ryan Scott cross.
Bowers made four changes to the side that were defeated 1-0 by Heybridge Swifts, as Rob Small looked to strike a balance between giving squad players minutes and having a real go at advancing to the Semi Final. In came Tom Hine, Lewis Manor, Luke Hirst and Jamie Dicks for Ryan Sammons, Brad Warner, David Knight and James Thomas all of who dropped to a strong Bowers bench.
Andy Wilton was called into action within the first 30 seconds as he held Ben Marlow’s long range effort. Wilton was on call again soon after as Bowers were caught out at the back, but Shaun Batt’s strike was straight at the Bowers number one.
Bowes first chance came through Jamie Dicks, but his right-foot volley was tame and Jake Giddens was able to gather comfortably. Callum Leahy volleyed wide, before Quentin Monville drilled in a cross which a diving Lewis Manor headed wide.
Just after the half an hour mark Andy Wilton produced an outstanding save to deny Shaun Batt. The Rocks striker had managed to get onto the end of an Ibrahim Sori Diallo cross, but Wilton somehow plucked the ball off of the line to keep the scores level.
Bowers started the second half brightly and came close to opening the scoring but Leahy’s header was straight at Giddens. After Sheehan had head wide, Martyn Stokes hit a superb 60 yard ball into the path of Monville but he was denied once more by Giddens.
Andy Wilton’s long ball forward was allowed to bounce, and when Monville stabbed at a loose ball the hosts thought they had finally beaten Giddens but Hirst poked the ball wide under pressure from Scott.
With Bowers momentarily down to 10 men due to a knock to Tom Hine, East Thurrock struck as Ryan Scott, who would later go off for a facial injury, whipped in a great ball from the right and Shaun Batt glanced the ball home from 10 yards.
Bowers made changes as they looked to grab an equaliser with Ryan Sammons, Brad Warner and David Knight coming on for Tom Hine, Callum Leahy and Luke Hirst respectively. Monville again came close to equalising as he cut in from the right and fired in a low drive, but Giddens got down low to his left to tip the ball around the post.
Bowers were unable to fashion a clear cut chance to snatch an equaliser and go out having progressed to their farthest stage in the Essex Senior Cup since going out to Colchester United in 2015/16.
